It appears that Govt has heard your long standing ask LocalCircles and its circles members to make social media more accountable.

Here are some rules that they have announced today. I think its a good step forward and will reduce the abuse rumor and harassment that take place on FB Twitter Instagram and many other platforms.

Everyone should read and we should give inputs to GOI more

Implementation of OTT Controls must be Inevitable even Conditioning 2 Female Judges in the Body/ Commission. more
Social media platforms may do business in India but they need to follow the Constitution and laws of India more
Yes its a very Good step and am sure things will further improve i.e. more steps will be taken by the Govt in times to come to DISCIPLINE the social media platform. This will surely NOT only serve as a deterrence to the errant and the inimical forces but also give us all teeth to take action against those who were without the fear of any punitive action could tarnish the character and reputation of individuals. more
No government body/official/politician should be the one who decided what is objectionable and should be deleted. An independent body with members from different strata of society should be formed more

I think the two different problems of misuse of social media and the oversight of OTT have been mixed up. While the former poses a real threat by spreading fake news and misinformation and incitement to violent riots is something that needs to be curbed, putting OTT platforms within this bracket is totally unwarranted. The former is a real threat anywhere in the world particularly as a result of the AI mechanisms which reinforce your own personal views by providing more of similar content. So you never get the moderating influence of the opposite point of view. Also the content is totally unregulated and unverified. Modern techniques of image manipulation can help to make videos which are totally artificial. For example you can easily make a video of our PM calling for nuclear annihilation of our neighbor. These are very serious issues. On the other hand, OTT content is basically provided by the very same people who are active in content creation in Cinema and TV. However content from abroad is also shown on these channels which are not subject to controls as in India but they reflect the ethos of the countries where they are produced; but definitely it is NOT pornography by any standards. Unfortunately, many in our country try to impose our own narrow morals on everybody else, which is certainly not in tune with the present times. And you cannot access Amazon Prime or Netflix unless you subscribe. So why get worked up? If you don't like the content, you do not subscribe or watch them. Even though I subscribe to these channels, if there is a content that seems to offend my sensibilities, I do not watch them. Instead of trying to control content, one might ask for more detailed information on the content and specific warning of sexually explicit and age-inappropriate content. Let us all grow up a bit and remember that India is also the land of kama Sutra, As far as social media is concerned, DO NOT believe everything you see there unless confirmed by more reliable and independent media. But remember that they also help you. Today my entire family is in constant touch with each other through a family group. Ten years ago, I would have spent a fortune to call my son in USA but today I can do an hour of video chat with hardly any expense. So let us use them for the benefits that we get. more
