Safety

Safety in Railways must be given top priority. Unmanned level crossings pose problems not only for the general public but to the trains as well. Since manned level crossing is a costly proposition, automatic systems must be considered. The level crossings could be automated with easily available tools. Web cameras can monitor the gates and the tracks and transmit the images to the nearest stations and to the pilot of the trains much ahead of the approach.

There must be electronic surveillance of the tracks as well in areas where Maoist and terrorist activities are present. Let us not underestimate the threats and utilize modern technology to our advantage. more

While thinking of security in trains, we have to adopt the doors function in a better way. For example, in UK and USA, the train doors automatically shut just before train begins to move, with a clear announcement `closing the doors`. And doors open automatically only after announcing the name of next station and stopping the train to still. No mishaps occur there due to an open door in a moving train which in our trains has always been a cause of accidents, as me too lost a friend who was a medical doctor, recently. A great script writer, a famous footballer, working men and women lost their lives due to the unscientific, out dated door function of Indian trains. I remember the announcement in a UK train'' next station is Heathrow, there is a gap between the train and platform, ...'' Why can`t we change..the British have changed a lot. Remember, our trains were designed originally by the British! more
Not only, unmanned level crossings are undesirable, manned level xings are more undesirable,as these are also accident prone. In addition, manned level xings involve huge recurring & capital cost (approx. 4 crores per crossing) more
Next day all gadgets may be stolen and a person is must for maintenance more
Regular monitoring of tracks, modern safety systems are paramount more
