Senior citizen travelling by train.

I am also a senior person of 70 years. For the last 5 months at least I had 8 long trip journeys. Every time I was facing the same problems and I find it difficulties on going to upper seats since I have knees injury problems while in service. Ofcourse I had not made advance bookings and every time I was placed in WL or remote seat availability. On inquiry I was told that while making advance booking seat allocations have been done on spot and few seats are kept reserved for VIP, tatkal and other quotas. Out of these tatkal will get first preference since they are paying additional amounts and balance of seats are allocated to the persons on waiting list etc and not possible to allocate lower seats to seniors due to non availability. more

Ashok Ashok has got high hopes on the minister .Pl keep it .But let me tell the truth that as Mr Subratha choudhary correctly told ,computer is headless. However those senior citizens who book well in advance get lower berths allotted against sr citizens quota.Even after exhausting the quota if vacancy is there the computer allots lower berths to senior citizens. But what a computer can do if lower berth is not available ?If waiting list confirmed then the seat allocation is as per the list WL number .Emergency quota also got some lower berths ,allocation is done manually ,and they see the age of the person and special request and allot lower berthes. In my opinion the railways are alloting the senior citizens lower barths as far as possible. They cannt keep the lower berths vacant till a senior citizen books a ticket .Hence best method to avoid hardship is to book early or after boarding the train you can request co passenger to accomodate you in lower berthes with the knowledge of the train conductor. Most young people are adjusting . more
Sharing one of my own experiences, in Jan 2019, I had to travel to Bangalore' from Delhi. So, I booked tickets in October 2018 itself, with preference for lower birth. Being aged just 23 years, I got confirm LB! One can infer that this could have happened due to so many seats available at that early moment. But my brother, booked seats in Dec 2018, with preference to LB, & he too got a LB.
When I boarded the train, I came to know that ladies were in the same compartment getting MB & UB! Even when they booked earlier than my brother.
There were even some senior citizens and people traveling alongwith their family and all of them got Seats in separate compartments and seniors got UB & MB. Now, do u have any reply to this, I can share my tickets if needed. more
I 100% agree on this issue.. As the online ticketing though have option for the "Sr Citizen" BUT the Computer is Headless chicken so can't apply Brain about 'climbing problem' of the seniors or otherwise persons having knee problem. But The software which run such thing Though run by "Specially" intelligents raele Think about it and need to be sent for Railway minister to Redress... more
Perhaps, while booking in IRCTC web site there is a drop down menu, under quota select Senior citizen. You will be alloted lower berths if sufficient berths are available. more

:For avoiding discomfort and hardship for not only senior citizens but differently able persons or ladies accompanied by small kids, making arrangements as follows may be considered: A foldable polyethelene ladder may be provided above each entrance of each compartment that will drop down when a button is pressed. The ladder may be used for climbing to the entrance by the elderly and the differently abled instead of the steps available for common passengers at the entrances.Similar ladder may be provided for climbing to the Upper Berth and the middle Berth .Wheelchairs may be made available on requisition and payment in advance at the entrance of the Railway Station and also on alighting from the Train with the requisition being conveyed over telephone in advance to a telephone number whose number remains printed on the backside of each ticket as also painted on the inside of each compartment. An Escalator may be provided for passengers to go to another platform and for a motorised wheelchair to move up the stairs. more
