Skilling and Re-Skilling within Railways

As the PM launches the Skills India mission today, we would like to seek your inputs on key skills that are needed within Railways (from a customer/partner perspective) and what are the areas where people must be re-skilled/re-deployed to be more productive.

Our objective is to drive improved Railways performance (both financially and service wise) from within the existing human resources and your insights will be helpful. more

My suggestion is that railway employees who directly deal with public should be made people friendly, polite, courtious and disciplined b'coz they r actually face of Indian Railway.Internally the staff should be posted to other dept. also so they can improve their skill and can be utilised in case of emergency. For ex. Gp D staff may be posted to different depts so that in case of emergency they can be utilised for other dept work also.Sameway supervisors of one dept. may be posted to other branches of same dept. I think it will improve the efficiency of railway. more
First and formost is the realisation that railways is a service organisation. The better and more ease you provide to your services your business grows with it.. more
The staff needs to be customer oriented and services should be carried out professionally. Also importance of preventive maintenance, cleanliness, use of proper tools for maintenance and repairs, response to calls, proper uniform for service personals, serving food and snacks, providing bedding, are some points Overall each service needs a training more
For all technical staff one week refresher training once in six months to be given. Old obsolete & improper tools to be replaced with modern tools and equipments. more
The most important skill is inter-personal skills. The customer service of private companies is just amazing. They really want to keep the customers happy. Whereas at railways, or be it any other government organization, people are generally afraid of the authority. The behavior of TTEs, railway police, vendors, etc is generally arrogant. They are not at all friendly. Some of the problems of customers will be solved just by being friendly and having good inter-personal skills. more
