The Use of AI by School Students for Assignments: A Regressive Step in Learning?

The increasing reliance of school students on AI tools, such as ChatGPT, to complete assignments raises important concerns. Is this a setback in acquiring genuine knowledge and critical thinking skills? If students are allowed to submit assignments without understanding the material, how will they handle real-life situations that require these skills? Currently, many 11th-grade students use AI for assignments, only to reveal, upon questioning, that they lack any grasp of the subject or the content of their work.

Most teachers remain unaware when students use AI to generate assignments. Therefore, it becomes essential to implement checks to identify AI-generated work. Empowering students to integrate AI thoughtfully into their education is crucial, but they must learn to use it as a tool for learning and assessment—not as a shortcut.

This dependency on AI has hindered some students from understanding even the most basic concepts of their subjects. Teachers could benefit from using AI detection tools to identify machine-written content and assess true comprehension.

To truly gauge a student’s understanding, alternative assessment methods should be encouraged. Exercises like group viva and open-book exams can effectively assess a student’s comprehension, allowing them to demonstrate their grasp of the material in a more authentic manner. more

The concern expressed by Mr. Daniel is very much genuine. Students' over reliance on AI tools would certainly have a negative affect over the students' acquiring genuine basic and in depth knowledge of a subject as well as their critical thinking ability. The concerned authorities/agencies need to look into these concerns to find out effective remedies early. more
If AI is used to understand a particular topic, it is ok. But, if it used to do all the work of the student and teachers, then it is will lead to knowledge depletion. Teachers need to be well verset in using AI tools so that they can spot when AI is doing the work of the student. more
It's equally role of the parents also to ensure their kids don't rely on AI and do their learning more
It is almost like thesis submission for a P.G. course of research. Institutes can prepare what is needed at a cost. That is being submitted and the student is awarded. Of course in viva voce part they will be exposed when the examiners go a little deep beyond theory. This practice should be identified specially to select the right person for the post to accomplish the responsibilitiies. more
Yes, I agree. More and more students are taking the help of AI to do assignments. This is very concerning and teachers/authorities need to find out remedial action at the earliest. more
