Together against air pollution

Petrol & diesel prices are hardly having difference of Rs 5/- & at the same time Diesel vehicle cost around Rs 1 lakh more than Petrol vehicle with same specifications. So, I don't agree with your logic of auto companies promoting diesel vehicle. Secondly for cleaner fuel, we are directly moving from BS4 compliant vehicle to BE6 compliant vehicle in 2020. But I agree with your suggestion of hybrid vehicle.

Rather, I believe that encroachment on roads is the major culprit for Jams that lead to high level of air pollution. That encroachment need to be removed from all India. more

Most air pollution is the result of focusing too much growth in select cities. Factories, real estate & infrastructure development are a major source of air pollution besides vehicular traffic. People travel great distances in order to get to work, schools, hospitals etc. and they will do it every day. This is how life will go on. Growth of cities will lead to more people moving into the cities and they will in turn require more housing, travel and other amenities. This acts as a continuous feedback loop and will never end. Now take all this centralised growth away, and now there is less need for so many people to travel such great distances every day, be it through public or private transport. The only real engineering solution is decentralisation. What we really want is that every industry (including government services) be set up on a smaller scale in more and more smaller cities and villages. This means people will move around less for all their daily needs, and that too for the rest of their lives. This means less air pollution, less traffic, less waste, less ground water consumption, and less of everything that is unhealthy. Some of these measures are already in place (mostly public sector offices) but the most important question is how effective are these centres in comparison with their counterparts in the cities? A first step would be to improve schools and hospitals that are located other than in capital cities. Then, government should direct all other public/private players to set up their shops in these locations. All these centres should provide services on par with or of higher quality than in larger cities. Only then will the solution work. more
Cities like Mumbai are heavily populated. Also Vehicles are also above 3.3M.Road length is practically same for so many years. These all causes pollution as travel time has increased tremendously. more
Moving over to BE6 standard is fine, but unfortunately there are many factors for air pollution and traffic jams - poor road conditions, no parking facilities resulting in parking of vehicles on road, traffic jams cause pollution and waste of fuel due to slow moving traffic. Besides, 'jugad' vehicles which just use some discarded motor cycle engine having no registration, juice vendors on road who also use 'jugad' engine to run the juice machine, Diesel generators in shops ooze out thick smoke. more
All know very well that in metro it is the encroachment on roads which causes unmanageable traffic jam slowing down cars . The vehicles are taking much more times to cover the the same distance. Govt cannot touch else the business community would go on strike and twist the matter in their favor. Media seldom reflects this menace. Unless our community sticks to rule of land thing would remain difficult. more
