Top Priority for Railways in Budget 2017

51% of you have suggested that the top priority for Railways for Budget 2017 should be Safety. Below are your inputs from a previous discussion to make Railways accident free. Kindly review and share very specific initiatives that Railways must implement to make it safer. We look forward to your inputs!

Making Railways Safer: Citizen Inputs

1. The tracks with over service life of 10 years shall be checked for cracks using NDT methods
2. Tracks should be properly checked from time to time for their current status from the point of safety and a log should be maintained
3. Track inspectors should certify the life/status of the tracks after each inspection
4. Track replacing automatic machines should be made available in all major junctions so that they could be deployed at short notice
5. Many prestigious trains run with very old coaches, life over 30 years – these should
be upgraded
6. Collision Avoidance System should be installed in trains
7. Speed governors shall be installed to ensure speed limitation
8. All the fire accidents that have taken place during last 5 years should be analysed and preventive actions should be taken accordingly
9. Old bridges should also be repaired and made ‘train fit’
10. Fencing should be done at identified stations to prevent the passengers from crossing the tracks
11. Derailment should be addressed by defining programmed speed at various locations
using GPS systems and other technologies
12. RFID (Radio Frequency Identification ) technology can be explored effectively as a
double standard for signal management apart from present setup
13. Unmanned level crossings should be made more secure
14. The railway engines should be compatible to sensors which will detect any damage of railway track ahead
15. There is strict quality control needed on material, parts and instruments purchased
16. Auto signalling and lessor sensors for the orderly continuity of tracks can be mounted on every engine with auto breaking system
17. Stress management programs should be put in place for the drivers
18. The suspension of the coaches should be frequently checked to avoid derailment. more

Apart from this there should be a development of infrastructure of railway stations.Old buildings at stations which are not in use should be demolished. In busy stations and junctions proper waiting areas should be provided for passengers. In many stations there is no proper seating facility. It makes difficult for the elder passengers when there is no seating facility available. Other suggestions: 1. Opening 24*7 information counter at stations 2. Proper toilet facility at stations 3.Proper cleaning of railway tracks at stations 4. Electrification of railway lines 5. Making available baby foods at stations 6. Proper display systems at every stations for displaying trains arrival and departure 7. Ensuring the quality of foods served at stations and trains 8. Informing passengers when the train gets delayed 9. Providing medical facility at busy stations 10. Ensuring the safety of passengers in night journey especially ladies. 11. Displaying RPF and Police helpline numbers in every coaches more
Our tracks are overburdened. Extra tracks have to be laid for freight trains to help in faster movement. more
I think Leave travel concessions cost is born by Employer ( Government ) and no burden to Railways. more
The travel fair is too low for sleeper class . You would find scores of people travelling long distance frequently for no reason important. For example we find people on Kokan railway visiting native place weekly for it is cheaper than local fares to reach to Railway station ! Same is the case for passengers travelling from Mumbai to Gorakhpur and similar such destinations. So fare should be at least equivalent to Bus Fares. more
Test, repair, maintain what exists. Train the inspectors and workers, hire new qualified people in technical maintenance. more
