Unemployment

While the GDP rose to 8.2 % in the first quarter of this year – triggering jubilation in government circles – there was a drop of 1% in employment during the same period. Between July 2017 and July 2018, there has been a decline of 1.4% in the numbers of the employed. According to CMIE, the second quarter is also seeing a downward trend, with August 2018 witnessing a fall of 1.2% in employment.

While the decline in employment was seen from November 2017 itself, the labour force is on the increase. Right after demonetisation, the labour force shrank; people turned away from the labour market because they had no hopes of finding jobs. Now the unemployed are returning to the labour market, but there are no jobs to be found.

Even so, questions pertaining to employment are few and far between in the mainstream. Youngsters across the country are protesting under various banners but their concerns are not being addressed.

This circle has been coming up with solutions and seems to have Govt ears to some extent. Can we come up with any solutions to the unemployment problems and get them accepted? more

Most of the employment is in un organised sector.Govt does not have any statistics for them. Govt should find ways and means to count on them. Then only real unemployment figures will be known. more

It appears the employed or Un-employed depends on whether one has a Govt job or not. I wonder, how many of the vegetable and fruit sellers and those selling other commodities in daily/ weekly markets are considered EMPLOYED? I am quite sure no one has ever bothered to find this out. WHY? Because there are no statistics available for this kind of self-employment, mainly because such self-employed people do not submit Income-Tax returns, irrespective of their amount of earnings. Most people understand 'EMPLOYMENT' as having a Government or even Private job. In fact most of the enws papers and TV channels also have no statistics available. So they rely ONLY on the number of people in the PF rolls. Even the lakhs of people who have been given loans under Govt schemes are not considered EMPLOYED, though a majority of them may be earning good money from their area of work or business and also employing others. Are the maid servants and drivers who work for various individuals considered as 'EMPLOYED". I am quite sure they are not. How many of the Cycle-Rickshaw pullers, Auto drivers and E-Rickshaw drivers are considered employed? Unfortunately available statistics are mostly based on SALARIED people and a few business houses/ Shop keepers whos income levels are high. Probably 10 times as many need to be considered "employed", but for these data is not available. more
Is there a proper definition of being employed or unemployed? In urban sector most of heads of households may be employed or under employed. Even beggars can be taken as employed. Domestic helps, gardeners who work in several houses also earn substantially are definitely employed although in unorganized sector. I will like to know statics on employed people reflect such cases. more
The reason for Unemployment need to be assessed In my opinion some are illustreted below:- 1- Govt. has short fall in big numbers but threaten to fill the post due to high expenditure with low out put , even fourth class employee in Govt sector is expensive, the reason may be the salary is now being fixed without assessing work load, just to make happy all employee. Also to control the expenditure better way not to fill the vaccant post. The load on salary & pension is so high that now Govt. is proposing to reduce the strenght of even defence personnal. The reduction in strenghth affect the quality as experienced in most of the field now. 2- Due to shortage of personnel our quality of education is deterioting. This result in poor skill in most of the field , even our most of the qualified doctors are having skills less then earlier days JHOLA CHAP Doctors. 3- Due to poor quality of skillness even Private enterpreneur are not able to achieve optimum out put therefore not expending their capacity to generate further employment. Therefore there is need for wages as per work & reducing additional responsibility. more
